Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 5
Jul 28, 2008 Bat For Lashes, RJD2, Rock Plaza Central, Rogue Wave, Stars, Ted Leo

6. RJD2, The guy in this video is the subject of a future documentary called
“Crutch”. He’s a handicapable B Boy. The video is one continuous single
shot. Insane moves and a cool tune…
5. Bat For Lashes, When the song starts, I start humming “Be My Baby”. Also,
apparently one long, continuous shot. Love the Donnie Darko references.
4. Rock Plaza Central, This is a little ray of sunshine from an otherwise
cloudy band. The puppets are from the Canadian television show Nanalan.
Which, if you are up at 4:30 am, can be entertaining. P.S. Your dog wants
steak.
3. Stars, Normally I don’t approve of the whole “He’s leaving home for the
big city/Bronski Beat” style of video. Especially when it’s coupled with a
“Down and out, but he’s ok in the end” montage. Luckily, this song makes up
for the video. Props to the Fillmore’s shot.
2. Rogue Wave, I like this band a lot, but I can’t help feeling like they
think the O.C. is still on the air. Seriously, this song was written for a
hot girl in a bathing suit to walk down the beach while carrying her shoes.
When the chorus crashes, I can actually hear her ignoring me.
1. Ted Leo, Without the Pharmacists, it’s a little like the Travis/Britney
cover from a couple years ago. He really tries to nail those Idol high
parts, good for him, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs bit is an awesome bonus.

Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 4
Jul 28, 2008 Bruce Springsteen, Common, Kill the Lights, Mum, The Brunettes, Zero 7

6. The Brunettes, I think people from New Zealand have a pretty good sense
of humour. Here’s Degrassi for the Marionette lovers.
5. Bruce Springsteen, The Boss always makes me think of driving long
distances. Having just been on a great road trip, it made me nostalgic.
4. Common with Lily Allen, I might get sick of this in two months, but right
now I love it and, yeah, that’s my Ari…
3. Kill The Lights, Another plug, I admit. They’re opening for K-OS right
now and are playing Toronto on Sunday Sept. 9, at the Drake with the The
Diableros. A pretty ambitious video for an indie band.
2. Mum, I’ve always liked this band and this video has a Ralph Steadman vs.
Wes Anderson feel to it.
1. Zero 7, I still love good ambient, insert “hot girl” voice and a trippy
video and I’m sold!

Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 3
Jul 28, 2008 Modest Mouse, Petra Haden, Sebastien Tellier, The New Pornographers, They Might Be Giants, Travis

It was around this time that it was clear Kyle meant business and was going to stick to the Pix every week. Therefore some new design took shape including embedded video clips and bolding the artist’s names.
6. Modest Mouse – it seems that every band is running contests for fans to
make videos for their singles. It’s cheaper for the studios and some times
it works really well, case in point…
5. The New Pornographers – I have loved this band ever since they were on
the FUBAR soundtrack. Live on Letterman, where he refers to them as
“acclaimed”, too funny.
4. Travis – I have a rule of thumb, if I like three songs off an album, it’s
worth buying. Travis has always been one of those bands. This video makes
me have to pee though…
3. Sebastien Tellier – I saw this guy open for Air a few years ago and I
thought he was just another cheese-eatin surrender monkey with a guitar.
Glad to see he’s improved. Love songs are gay.
2. They Might Be Giants – This band never ceases to amaze me. If I had kids,
I would subject them to this band like they were the Beatles. I would not
feed them calamari though…
1. Petra Haden – She is music royalty. Her dad is Charlie Haden and her
brother-in-law is Jack Black. Normally when I hear the word “acapella” I run
away, but this works. Great video with a shout out to Wilson Phillips!
