Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 56

Hit And Run Edition

6. The Zutons – “What’s Your Problem”, Shout outs on the Pix are nothing new and we do like to keep the faithful happy, so Jacob (my man in Thailand) this one’s for you! This single hasn’t even been released yet. You can’t go wrong with slow motion slap and water balloon fights.

5. Throw Me The Statue – “Yucatan Gold”, This single’s name sounds a strain of the leafy green stuff. The band started out as a one man project. Which is why they still rely on drum machines, but they’ve evolved with a little help from their musician friends. They tour with Pedro The Lion, who I also like.

4. White Denim – “Shake Shake Shake”, This band reminds me of J.S.B.X., but the video reminds me a little too much of the movie Gummo. The lead singer’s dad is Geno Petralli; he was drafted by the Blue Jays in 1978 and played for twelve years in the MLB. His other sons play baseball and aren’t in bands.

3. Guillemots – “Kriss Kross”, This track sounds completely different from everything else I’ve heard by these guys. They went from sounding like Aqualung to sounding like Slade, I also kind of expected some sort of joke about early 90’s kid friendly hip hop.

2. The Spinto Band – “Brown Boxes”, I warned everyone a couple of weeks ago that these guys would be back. When cute girls recommend bands to me and I actually like them, I tend to inflict said bands on everyone. I chose this live version because the video was quite long and really reminded me of BBC’s The Young Ones, which was an amazing show, but shouldn’t be copied.

1.Sigur Ros – “Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur”, I’m not even going to pretend I know what this song is about or what the title means. Their new stuff sounds a lot happier than their older material. We at the Pix have never solicited before, but if anyone has a line on two tix to see these guys at Massey Hall, it would be greatly appreciated…

Chew The Fat Edition

6. Radiohead – “Ceremony”, So the Radiohead circus came to town last weekend and was pretty good. It wasn’t my favourite time seeing them, but it was still cool. They didn’t talk much to the audience and they didn’t play much old stuff, but the solar powered light show (coupled with the fireworks from the Ex) was pretty sweet. This is a Joy Division cover by the way…

5. Bettye Lavette – “Talking Old Soldiers”, Throughout her life, Bettye recorded and toured, but never really got the recognition she deserved. She has played with Otis Redding, James Brown and the Drive-By Truckers, often without a record deal. This is “cheap drinking from a dirty glass in a smoky room” kind of music.

4. Takka Takka – “Silence”, These guys are from Brooklyn and their line up changes with almost every album. They recently opened for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and they just signed with a record label that will re-release their old albums. So we should be hearing more about them soon.

3. Black Mountain – “Wucan”, I’m a big fan of these guys and I usually hope for lots of success for the bands I like. However, it rubbed me the wrong way that they were on the Spiderman 3 soundtrack. That movie wasn’t dark enough for these guys, they deserve film noir.

2. My Morning Jacket – “Touch Me, I’m Going To Scream Part 2”, A live version of this track made the Pix months ago, but this one is much more polished and has a “Where The Wild Things Are” themed video. I am still loving this album so much.

1. Okkervil River – “Lost Coastlines”, I have such a hard on for these guys…they will be here with Crooked Fingers in October and I’ll be there. There is also a new album on the way, everything they do impresses me. Not the best audio quality possible, but it’s a taste of what’s to come…

Cutting The Apron Strings Edition

6. Travis – “Something Anything”, These guys have been on hiatus for a while; the bassist was on paternity leave. It’s good to see that they’re done in the studio and releasing an album in about three weeks. The guitar work on this single is a little heavier than their usual stuff, can’t wait to see who they cover on the single’s b-side.

5. Bowerbirds – “In Your Talons”, The Pix faithful know how much I like the Mountain Goats; this is the band that is opening for them on tour. They are from Sedaris country, Raleigh, North Carolina. They are on the Dead Oceans record label, which boasts quite a few Pix repeat offenders.

4. Coral – “Being Somebody Else”, This band has been around since 1996 and they used to remind me of the Beach Boys and the Monkees, now they sound more like Belle and Sebastian. This is the new track that they are releasing on a compilation of their past singles.

3. Calexico – “Two Silver Trees”, Speaking of Sedaris, Calexico’s music often gets used as background filler on National Public Radio, America’s answer to the CBC. Every album this band records impresses me and the newest one features Iron and Wine and Douglas from Tortoise. The Drew Mac and I love lifting pints to the smooth sounds of Calexico. Word.

2. I’m From Barcelona – “Paper Planes”, When I clicked on this in my inbox, I wondered if it would be a M.I.A. cover. I’m glad it’s not and glad it’s as good as the last album that Barnudio turned me on to. Usually I don’t care for videos where the lyrics get acted out, but this one is pretty amusing. Cosby Show shout out!

1. Mogwai – “BatCat”, The last time I saw Mogwai live, they completely kicked my ass! They’re due back in Tdot in September and if this is the direction the album is going in, I’m going to spend more money on my favourite Scottish import. Mogwai videos are always a little strange, but this one messed with my head a little. The only thing that freaks me out more than little kid ghosts are little kids running through the forest…
