Tired of wakin’ up tired edition
6. The Raconteurs, Granted this track is a year old, I had never heard this superior live version. It even has that “Bill and Ted” guitar sound in the middle of the song. Jack White has my permission to be in as many bands as he wants. I hear Styx wants to replace Gowan.
5. The Apples in Stereo, This one was sent to me by a friend who makes the absolute best “year end compilation” mix CDs. Obviously, this one made the cut for him and since I’m still waiting for my copy of the CD, this will have to do in the mean time.
4. The Mary Onettes, These guys are Swedish and they channel that “Echo and the Bunnymen” sound very well. Apparently two of their tracks have been used on a TV show about young doctors in love, where people stand around looking forlorn, while hip music plays over the scene.
3. The Mountain Goats, I make jokes all the time about people who Sharpie their finger nails. This video is really weird, but I love this band. Their live shows are fantastic, they don’t talk to the audience much and they aren’t very animated, but there’s a lot of emotion behind the music.
2. Crooked Fingers, This might be the best Prince cover, ever. I apologize for the still shot instead of a video, but this track just blows my mind. Had there been video, it probably would have made #1. You should check this band out, they are amazing.
1. Thurston Moore, I’ve always had a soft spot for Moore’s solo work. It’s definitely more accessible than most Sonic Youth reverb manifestos. And I think it’s ridiculously cute to write a love song for your dog. The album cover montage is cool too.
