Kyle’s Six Pix - Vol. 62
Oct 9, 2008 Benoit Pioulard, End Program, Mercury Rev, The Microphones, The New Pornographers, The Unicorns

A Very Particular Set Of Skills Edition
6. End Program – “Polarbeard”, I have two scars on my left arm from this video shoot. I was acting as a barrier between the (very expensive) camera and the pit. This is a plug for my friend Matt’s band and for the video shooting stylings of Andrew and Alex, who I work with. It actually looks less dangerous in the video than it was.
5. Benoit Pioulard – “Ragged Tint”, Due to his name, I assumed he was French. Turns out he was born in Michigan and now resides on a farm in Oregon. He creates a lot of catchy songs that I’ve heard described as “shoe-gazing folk”.
4. The New Pornographers – “Mutiny, I Promise”, I think this track is at least a year old, so it’s kind of odd that they just released this wacky video. Yes, that is Mel from Flight of the Conchords. I should make a bare arms/armed bear joke here, but I’m too tired.
3. The Unicorns – “Child Star”, From the information I’ve able to find; these guys formed a band, released limited copies of albums and then broke up. All before I had ever heard of them, I discovered them last week. I couldn’t find anything, but fan made videos and love letters from broken hearted followers about how they toured too much, too soon. I love how raw this sounds.
2. The Microphones – “Sand”, Another fan made video, I apologize. However, this is an amazing Eric’s Trip cover. This musical project also goes by the moniker Mount Eerie and refer to themselves as “folktronica”. Apparently, they are quite preachy about the environment and they record songs with titles like “Don’t Smoke / Get Off The Internet”. Weird.
1. Mercury Rev – “Butterfly’s Wing”, This video will more than make up for the two fan made ones. It reminds me of Kozyndan, one of my favourite graphic artists. This band has always impressed me; on their albums and live. They have a very “full” sound. This is a bit of a departure from what I think they usually sound like, but I am enjoying it.
