6. Passion Pit – “Sleepyhead”, These guys are a new discovery for me, they hail from Cambridge, Mass and take their name from a Loverboy song. You can stream their entire album on their MySpace page and if you were a fan of Avalanches (like me), you’ll like the rest of their stuff.
5. Low – “Monkey”, I’ve always liked this slowcore band, but this track is completely new to me. I love discovering older songs by bands I like, but invariably someone will say, “Dude, I played that for you over a year ago…” So, I apologize in advance to whoever it was who turned me on to these guys, I’m guessing it was Barnudio.
4. Q Tip – “Move”, His new album kicks so much ass. This video, not so much, but it is a funny throw back to the Soul Train / Michael Jackson days. I’d have to double check, but I think this is a J Dilla hook. You can tell I really like an album when an artist appears twice on the Pix in a month.
3. Ben Folds (featuring Regina Spektor) – “You Don’t Know Me”, I often enjoy Ben Folds collaborations and this one is no exception. Spektor has an amazing voice and Folds has an ability to create catchy pop songs like few others. This video has something in common with #1 this week; I’ll give you a cookie if you figure it out.
2. The Dears – “Money Babies”, Chalk this one up to me being M.I.A. I was supposed to be at this show, but I have been bleeding money at gigs lately. So this is the new Dears single, I really like how their sound is maturing. Fans that were at the show said the lead singer broke down at one point and started crying. God damned rock stars and their feelings!
1. MGMT – “The Youth”, These guys are a bit of an “It” band right now, they make me laugh because they wear capes. This video is downright creepy; kids in makeup freak me out. The short kid looks like he belongs in The Dark Crystal. “Sometimes, I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!”
