Kyle’s Six Pix - Vol. 64

Throwing The Torch Edition

6. Islands – “Creeper”, My long season of concerts is coming to a close very soon and these guys were definitely a highlight of this year. They played with their good friends Stars, who are no strangers to the Pix. I’m really enjoying this new Islands album; it feels like Jamie’s departure from the band won’t hinder their sound too much. This track captures the layered feel of said album and the video is ok.

5. That Ghost – “Open Windows”, This is a lo fi project manned by an eighteen year old genius, he had three full length albums released by the age of seventeen. I still had trouble getting bras off at that age; I can’t even imagine creating pretty pop songs at that point in my life. There’s cool artwork and tracks to download at his MySpace page.

4. Patrick Watson – “Giver”, This has such a Jeff Buckley feel to it, I couldn’t get it out of my head for days. I wish these guys would tour and record more, but in the mean time there are lots of live videos to be had.

3. Herman Dune – “My Home Is Nowhere Without You”, These guys are a very recent discovery and I’ve liked every simplistic track I’ve heard by them. Unfortunately, they played Toronto right before my friend Keith told me about them. It’s amazing to me that even though I rarely go an hour without listening to music, I still miss out on some incredible stuff. This has a pretty cute video too, thank God they didn’t use mimes in it.

2. Octopus Project – “I Saw The Bright Shinies”, Here’s a little taste of Halloween. Next week there will be a spooky themed edition of the Pix; so if you have suggestions, feel free to submit them. Do not suggest “Thriller”, it’s been done to death. I have yet to see a video by this project that wasn’t animated or comprised of stock footage.

1. Frightened Rabbit – “I Feel Better”, So I get to add these guys to the list of Scottish bands I like. I saw them this week open up for the Spinto Band. When they were done playing they took half the audience with them. They really impressed me with their energy and beer drinking ability.
