Kyle’s Six Pix - Vol. 61
Oct 2, 2008 Annuals, Fleet Foxes, My Bloody Valentine, Okkervil River, The National, The Walkmen

The Usual F***ing Suspects Edition
6. Fleet Foxes – “He Doesn’t Know Why”, I’m still listening to this band daily, they really impressed me when I saw them live. I really love their Beach Boys style harmonies and how lo fi the sound can feel for how many members of the band are playing, but I’m not too sure about the use of goats in this video.
5. Annuals – “Confessor”, Sorry about the ten second count down for this track, but sometimes there is only one version of the video available. These guys have been an iPod staple of late for me. The only videos I’ve seen for this band have been animated and I love the fairy tale feel to this one. I can’t believe I’m following a goat video with a centaur video.
4. Okkervil River – “Lost Coastlines”, A live, stripped down version of this track graced the Pix a couple of weeks ago. I was strangely addicted to their last album and inflicted it on people at the most inopportune times. I’m hoping the rest of the new album sounds like this and I’m going to see them live very soon. Crooked Fingers are opening, it should rock…
3. The Walkmen – “I Lost You”, One thing I love about this band is how distinctive their guitar sound is. Due to financial and time constraints, I don’t actually attend every show that I intend to. I missed these guys for the second time recently and now I really regret it. They seem to sound better live than recorded, personal preference I guess.
2. My Bloody Valentine – “Soon”, If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to have your face melted off, you should have seen this band live. It only took about fifteen years for me to see them twice and it was, officially, the loudest show I’ve ever seen. All the people I know who attended the sonic and visual assault felt deaf and blinded the next day. It said so on their Facebook profiles. I know this video is shaky, but that’s how you feel at their shows.
1. The National – “Apartment Story”, Another iPod staple lately, they’ve been busy too. They opened for R.E.M. this past summer and have been lending their music to some American politician named Obama. I’m really hoping they tour again soon and play somewhere smaller so they can play tunes like this. If you like this song, please check out the rest of their stuff, it’s hypnotic.

6. Annuals, I just got turned on to these guys recently, thanks BarnAudio! I prefer their live stuff, but this video had to be posted. They are playing Coachella this year and they will play the Drake in June.
5. White Denim, These guys have only released EPs so far, but I’ve liked everything I’ve heard so far. I like kinetic and bluesy stuff. The video is a little messed up, but safe for work. They are touring with Tapes N Tapes right now.
4. sOuth, I swear that’s the way they spell their band name. They were mentored by the Stone Roses and UNKLE and produce some pretty good, light Britpop. My roommate probably heard them on “The O.C.”
3. She and Him, You might recognize the vocalist, I think she’s almost famous or something. The real beauty of this track is the one and only Yo La Tengo as the backing band. They really seem to be having fun with this.
2. Born Ruffians, These Toronto rockers are getting a lot of hype and buzz and deservedly so. They have a CD release gig at Lee’s Palace this Saturday and yours truly will be there if I can keep the Mooseheads to a minimum. This video will soon be seen on Fox’s “When Farm Animals Attack”.
1.Constantines, Holy crap! This band continues to kick my ass! I saw them play about two weeks ago and the live version of this track was blistering. They play the Phoenix at the beginning of May and I can’t wait to see them again. They will also be part of the soundtrack to my disc golfing when they play Toronto Island this September.
