Kyle’s Six Pix - Special Edition
Sep 30, 2008 Black Mountain, Caribou, Holy F***, Plants and Animals, Stars, The Weakerthans

The Polaris Prize Edition
So last night the prestigious Polaris Prize (all $20,000 of it) was awarded to Caribou. As I looked at the list of nominees, I noticed that Six of them had been featured on the Six Pix. Conincidence? I decided to recap them in order of who I thought was most deserving. I have to admit, based solely on the buzz I hear from fellow music geeks, I thought that Stars were going to win. I’m happy with Caribou, but I was secretly hoping that Holy Fuck would take the big money.
6. Black Mountain – “Wucan”, This is a live version from Brooklyn, recorded last February.
5. The Weakerthans – “Civil Twilight”, This is a live version from the South By Southwest festival a couple of weeks ago.
4. Stars – “You’re Ex-Lover Is Dead”, This is actually one of my favourite pop songs. This version is from this past summer at Coachella.
3. Plants And Animals – “Bye Bye Bye”, Give these guys a while and I think they will be just as popular as Arcade Fire or Stars. Havers likes them enough to get up at 7 am to see them. Usually he only gets out of bed for Pop Tarts.
2. Caribou – “Irene”, Not an official music video, but the song has been set to footage of Canadian wildlife. It’s very “Hinterland”. Congratulations on the win, artist formerly known as Manitoba.
1. Holy Fuck! – “Frenchy’s”, If you are a Maritimer, you should know the second hand clothing empire that this song is named after. I bought a pair of jeans there once for three dollars and found a twenty dollar bill in the pocket. Score!

Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 55
Aug 21, 2008 Betty Lavette, Black Mountain, My Morning Jacket, Okkervil River, Radiohead, Takka Takka

Chew The Fat Edition
6. Radiohead – “Ceremony”, So the Radiohead circus came to town last weekend and was pretty good. It wasn’t my favourite time seeing them, but it was still cool. They didn’t talk much to the audience and they didn’t play much old stuff, but the solar powered light show (coupled with the fireworks from the Ex) was pretty sweet. This is a Joy Division cover by the way…
5. Bettye Lavette – “Talking Old Soldiers”, Throughout her life, Bettye recorded and toured, but never really got the recognition she deserved. She has played with Otis Redding, James Brown and the Drive-By Truckers, often without a record deal. This is “cheap drinking from a dirty glass in a smoky room” kind of music.
4. Takka Takka – “Silence”, These guys are from Brooklyn and their line up changes with almost every album. They recently opened for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and they just signed with a record label that will re-release their old albums. So we should be hearing more about them soon.
3. Black Mountain – “Wucan”, I’m a big fan of these guys and I usually hope for lots of success for the bands I like. However, it rubbed me the wrong way that they were on the Spiderman 3 soundtrack. That movie wasn’t dark enough for these guys, they deserve film noir.
2. My Morning Jacket – “Touch Me, I’m Going To Scream Part 2”, A live version of this track made the Pix months ago, but this one is much more polished and has a “Where The Wild Things Are” themed video. I am still loving this album so much.
1. Okkervil River – “Lost Coastlines”, I have such a hard on for these guys…they will be here with Crooked Fingers in October and I’ll be there. There is also a new album on the way, everything they do impresses me. Not the best audio quality possible, but it’s a taste of what’s to come…

6. MGMT, There seems to be some debate over whether their name means “management” or not. I really like the keyboard in this track and more people should wear capes.
5. Black Mountain, These guys are Canadian (always a good thing) and this video is bits of Wim Wenders “Wings of Desire”, which is a fantastic movie.
4. Dirty on Purpose, This is the music that you should hear at the end of a lengthy pub session, it gives you that energy to stumble home happy. Pretty slick video too.
3. Dead Meadow, I still can’t believe “stoner rock” is now a category that music writers use, but this fits that label. Watch for the hippy drummer in overalls without a shirt. Classic.
2. Sam Amidon, This guy is so much like Nick Drake, if Nick had been a hillbilly cartoonist from Vermont. This is such a ridiculously pretty song and a cool video to boot. Screw the prairies.
1. Heavy Trash, Jon Spencer is back! He’s changed his sound a little, but he is still rocking the house. Rockabilly blues yo!
