Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 56
Aug 28, 2008 Guillemots, Sigor Ros, The Spinto Band, The Zutons, Throw Me The Statue, White Denim

Hit And Run Edition
6. The Zutons – “What’s Your Problem”, Shout outs on the Pix are nothing new and we do like to keep the faithful happy, so Jacob (my man in Thailand) this one’s for you! This single hasn’t even been released yet. You can’t go wrong with slow motion slap and water balloon fights.
5. Throw Me The Statue – “Yucatan Gold”, This single’s name sounds a strain of the leafy green stuff. The band started out as a one man project. Which is why they still rely on drum machines, but they’ve evolved with a little help from their musician friends. They tour with Pedro The Lion, who I also like.
4. White Denim – “Shake Shake Shake”, This band reminds me of J.S.B.X., but the video reminds me a little too much of the movie Gummo. The lead singer’s dad is Geno Petralli; he was drafted by the Blue Jays in 1978 and played for twelve years in the MLB. His other sons play baseball and aren’t in bands.
3. Guillemots – “Kriss Kross”, This track sounds completely different from everything else I’ve heard by these guys. They went from sounding like Aqualung to sounding like Slade, I also kind of expected some sort of joke about early 90’s kid friendly hip hop.
2. The Spinto Band – “Brown Boxes”, I warned everyone a couple of weeks ago that these guys would be back. When cute girls recommend bands to me and I actually like them, I tend to inflict said bands on everyone. I chose this live version because the video was quite long and really reminded me of BBC’s The Young Ones, which was an amazing show, but shouldn’t be copied.
1.Sigur Ros – “Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur”, I’m not even going to pretend I know what this song is about or what the title means. Their new stuff sounds a lot happier than their older material. We at the Pix have never solicited before, but if anyone has a line on two tix to see these guys at Massey Hall, it would be greatly appreciated…

Holding my Breath, Bits and Pieces Edition
6. Saul Williams, This track is about a year old, but one of my friends went to see him live and keeps playing this song. It got stuck in my head and now I hear it in a Nike commercial all the time. Saul has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a masters’ degree in acting. That’s a pretty killer combination.
5. Mike Doughty, I was a huge fan of his band, Soul Coughing. It’s good to see he’s still working away. It’s odd that he stole the chorus from such a famous song, but he is well known for having an odd sense of humour. Once he announced he was running for senate on the “soy gluten” ticket.
4. Guillemots, This track is just too catchy. I worry about ending up like Sir Ian’s character in this video. Alone, in a suit and surrounded by concrete is no way to live or die. The band likes to wear animal masks when they play live and most of their songs, like the band name, are references to birds.
3. Tapes ‘N Tapes, I got introduced to this band a couple of years ago and I continue to be impressed with their shit. If you haven’t seen the MTV show “Human Giant”, you should. It’s pretty funny and Tapes ‘N Tapes have made appearances begging people to blog about them and to post MP3s.
2. The Jealous Girlfriends, A little shout out to Telly Tunes for this recommendation. She knows her “loud, quiet, loud” bands and these guys remind me of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. If I had found a live track with better audio, you would be able to pick out the Mazzy Star style vocals.
1. Foals, These guys have made the Pix before. I have a soft spot for spacey, indie britpop. This band has existed in about three previous incarnations, which they disbanded every time due to things getting too serious. They sound like my kind of musicians.
