Creating a Rumpus Edition

6. Spoon, Sometimes I feel guilty for liking “it” bands, but I can’t turn down good pop songs. The animation in this video reminds me of old school South Park meets Monty Python.

5. Los Campesinos!, These guys are one my favourite bands of the last year and I love that they are just as entertaining live and acoustic. I’m still kicking myself for missing them last time they were in Toronto, stupid sleep deprivation!

4. Modest Mouse, A little while after their last album, a video circulated with the lead singer stabbing himself on stage with a bread knife. I got worried that they were going to burn out and quit. Glad I was wrong.

3. My Morning Jacket, These guys have a new album coming out and if it all sounds like this track there’s a guy in Thailand who will be just as happy as me.

2. Monade, If this band reminds you of Stereolab or Slint, your observation would be astute. I’ve been practicing my French lately and this song makes me smile. Thanks to Max’s owner for the heads up.

1. Portishead, I’ve been anxiously awaiting new music from these guys for almost ten years, that’s like a third of my life. It’s been like waiting for a pizza that you ordered and keep calling to find out why it’s not there yet. For me, there’s no such thing as bad pizza or Portishead.

“If it weren’t for bad luck…” edition

6. Mobius, I put these guys on a road trip mix once and they became the hit of the trip. They are ridiculously melodic and call their sound “technicolor malaise”. Perfect for me.

5. of Montreal, Probably one of the weirdest band names I’ve heard in a while considering they are from Athens, Ga. The video feels pornographic, like a dirty old man voyeur. Apparently one of their songs is the theme to an Outback Steakhouse commercial. I like steak.

4. Modest Mouse, This band has come a long way from “Float On” and The O.C. soundtracks. They put on an amazing live show, I stayed far later than I should have when they played Olympic Island in Toronto. I should have been in bed.

3. Los Campesinos, People recommend music to me all the time because that’s my main topic of conversation. Sometimes I don’t remember what people tell me because my glass is empty. Man, I’m glad I remembered this one.

2. My Morning Jacket, I love this band. Everything I hear is pretty damn good, but I don’t own a single album, nor do I think about them when in music stores. This is a mental hurdle I intend to overcome. Even Conan wants to buy their album, maybe he’ll pick me up a copy.

1.Do Say Make Think, This is live! In a field! I should really hang out in fields more often; Linus Van Pelt may have been on to something. Good Grief, this is amazing and in no way Peanuts affiliated (I just have a weird sense of humour).

Kyle’s Six Pix Vol. 3

It was around this time that it was clear Kyle meant business and was going to stick to the Pix every week. Therefore some new design took shape including embedded video clips and bolding the artist’s names.

6. Modest Mouse – it seems that every band is running contests for fans to
make videos for their singles. It’s cheaper for the studios and some times
it works really well, case in point…

5. The New Pornographers – I have loved this band ever since they were on
the FUBAR soundtrack. Live on Letterman, where he refers to them as
“acclaimed”, too funny.

4. Travis – I have a rule of thumb, if I like three songs off an album, it’s
worth buying. Travis has always been one of those bands. This video makes
me have to pee though…

3. Sebastien Tellier – I saw this guy open for Air a few years ago and I
thought he was just another cheese-eatin surrender monkey with a guitar.
Glad to see he’s improved. Love songs are gay.

2. They Might Be Giants – This band never ceases to amaze me. If I had kids,
I would subject them to this band like they were the Beatles. I would not
feed them calamari though…

1. Petra Haden – She is music royalty. Her dad is Charlie Haden and her
brother-in-law is Jack Black. Normally when I hear the word “acapella” I run
away, but this works. Great video with a shout out to Wilson Phillips!
